Global focus on sustainability and climate

In the recent years, there has been a massive focus on the environment and sustainability, not least among consumers and different organisations. In the feed industry we have been focusing on resource utilization for decades.

Focusing on the environment

Livestock production is often highlighted as a significant sinner when talking about climate impact and sustainability, and several of the major players in the food industry have joined the debate. Danish Crown aims to be the world's most sustainable and successful meat producer in 2030, e.g. through sustainability certification of farmers. Similarly, Agriculture and Food has a vision that the Danish food industry must be climate neutral in 2050.

In the pig production, we have been focusing on the environment for decades and have had success with a targeted effort on e.g. phosphorus digestibility and reduction in nitrogen emissions (see figures). The introduction of phytase in the early 90s has significantly increased the digestibility of phosphorus and thus contributed to a halving of the excretion to the environment up to today (see figure). At the same time, a declaration of intent in the industry in DK was concluded in 2002 to phase out dicalcium phosphate in favor of more digestible feed phosphates such as monocalcium phosphate. In addition, the introduction of synthetic amino acids has meant that we have been able to reduce the proportion of crude protein in the feed and thus, from the 80s until today, nitrogen has halved to the environment (see figure).

Action in Vilomix
At Vilomix, we work on a daily basis with optimization of our products for the best product for the price. Examples is better utilization of non-available nutrients in the feed by the addition of e.g. enzymes and probiotics as well as by using synthetic amino acids.
The sustainability and climate debate have become part of the agenda in the feed and food industries and in Vilomix we are constantly focusing on sustainability in livestock production / feed production. Therefore, we are in close contact with suppliers of ingredients that focus on developing new solutions for the continued reduction of climate impacts from agriculture in the future, and at the same time being able to optimize the best solution for our customers.
